Lincoln Penny With "k" Mark

Mattit New Member United States 3 Posts	Posted 10/17/2019 12:34 am I have a 1964 NMM Lincoln Penny (it's yellow, btw) that has a "K" stamped up by the nose. We were intrigued by the yellow. But I have learned, after some research, that it's probably nothing more than a science experiment result. But the "K" mark does intrigue me, as I haven't been able to find anything about it. Due to the available real estate, this spot is a pretty common one for counterstamps on cents. Unfortunately, when this was done, the stamp wasn't held quite perpendicular to the surface of the coin and only part of the design was added to the coin. I was thinking that this might be part of the popular US States counterstamps, but the outline that is visible doesn't look like either Alaska or Oklahoma, which would be the obvious choices. Here is a link to a popular thread on CCF where people post their counterstamped coins. You might skim through all of the pictures trying to find a similar design. Your coin looks like they started the counterstamp too high on the coin and just stopped. It may be plated or gold washed. The 1974 date was used for this "State Penny," as it was called, as a souvenir of Alaska's 25th anniversary of joining the United States.
