Found this searching rolls today. I am 99.9% sure it is 06P-1DO-017; it matches all of the die characteristics perfectly. The only thing is everything appears to be "muddier" than the photos on coppercoins.com; probably a late MDS or early LDS. I include photos; sorry they aren't the best as I don't have a microscope and even with super macro on my Fuji FinePix S700 zooming the image too much tends to cause the image to pixelate (did I spell that right?). Plus, bottom line, I take lousy photos! Hopefully the experts can see enough.

If your assertion that that the coin you have found is truly late MDS or LDS that would have a profound impact on the current hypotheses about the rarity of this particular variety.

In hand this is an exciting DDO that has doubling characteristics that are viewable to the naked eye. Personally I am hoping you're incorrect about the coin being LDS as I very much like this variety and know its popularity will wane if the claim of rarity is disproved.

It might be worth sending it to CONECA (or someone else) for attribution.

What I mean when stating that I thought it was a later die state is on the photos on coppercoins.com the lines made by the doubling are clear, wheareas on the coin I have a lot of the lines are not very visible. Clearly the doubling matches 017, but the lines between the two images are not as well defined. I need to get the money together for a QX5 so I can put some real photos on here!

THAT'S IT! This week I buy one, even though I can't afford it (I'm serious!)

It's Pixellate - two Ls. ;)

The coin does appear to be late die state, which would make it an interesting subject for photography since the one on the site is of an earlier die state.

This does not, however, have any impact on the rarity of this die - still very few have been found to date, regardless of die state, so it remains a very valuable and important doubled die. At such time that many more are found, a revisit on the values of this die may be necessary.

I know of a number of dies for which fewer than a hundred examples are known to exist and everything we know about minting coins would suggest at least half a million were struck. Says something about the overall survivability of our coins.

While it is true that finding the first late die state example of a scarce doubled die 'could' eventually have an impact on its value does not at all mean that it 'does' have such impact.

I went over the coppercoins.com and see what you mean. I'll look forward to hear what the experts say. Oops...looks like they did, congrats!
