I stumbled across this 1986 D penny with an extra clump of metal underneath the mint mark. Is this just a common error (if an error at all), or is it worth something and consequently worth keeping? Any information on what that clump of metal is would be greatly appreciated

It's a spender, the copper plating split (outside the D) during the coining process, allowing air to enter/meet the zinc layer causing rot to form under the copper plating and seperating from each layer.

Edited: you could probally peal/scrape off the copper plating around that area to reveil the gray zinc core

Thanks for the information all! It was actually really entertaining scraping away the copper to see the rot and zinc underneath
