I have previously posted images of a 1953 halfpenny with what I was told was a counterstamp. FIRST IMAGE.
Before that I posted a 1922 Penny with a hole in the King's head. SECOND IMAGE. I was told that was Post Mint Damage.
Then I have found on ebay an English Penny with a 'counterstamp'. THIRD IMAGE
So is there a dividing line between PMD and counterstamp?

Usually a counterstamp is letters, numbers or images.

Most consider counterstamping a form of PMD.

Holed coins are just that. Holed coins. Also considered to be PMD.

Any other mutilation as you put it is just that.

Ah, definitions!

I would say that a counterstamp is a particular type of PMD whereby images and/or letters are stamped onto a coin by a die or a punch.

As opposed to random PMD, like drilling a hole or hitting a coin with a hammer, the counterstamp generally has a purpose-perhaps political, perhaps advertising for a company, perhaps someone's name for a memento or gift.

But like any definitions, there will invariably be gray areas where an item is hard to classify one way or the other.

Counterstamps can be applied at a mint but then by definition they are not Post Mint Damage, although they may look exactly the same.

The practical difference between random PMD and a counterstamp is that the counterstamped coins are sometimes of great interest, maybe more so than the undamaged coin, if they can be tied to an important event in history or the organization or person doing the stamp can be identified.

Graffiti is also used as a term describing intentional marking, usually with a sharp object. Might as well toss that definition in too.

PMD is usually any event that happened to the coin after it was minted that changes how the coin looks.

All 3 of yours are PMD.

(For some time the RAM have been adding a Mint Mark to certain coins post mint which are NOT PMD, just a way of getting collectors to part with more money. Some people may consider these coins to be counterstamped).
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved
