I first found this dime when I picked it up off the street, I thought it looked strange, But I just assumed it was dirty. Then I later found an almost identical dime of a different year, Now I'm curious...

I'm making a thread for both coins since they are so similar, One is a 2001 D, The other is a 1966. My guess is that they are either missing a clad layer, Or have some kind of discoloration on them. (Or they are just really dirty )

It is just environmental damage, I found one just like those on Monday sitting in the dirt on a playground.

Dimes and quarters have a tendancy to turn brown or black when they are in certain types of dirt for a while. It can take very little time for this transition to take effect.

You can tell it is a coating as when the metal is rubbed the under color appears. If you carry them with your other change they will make the appearance appear as antiqued. The devices will turn silver, the fields will remain slightly colored.
