My pap passed away and we found a large collection of coins which we did not know he had. I just started looking through it and noticed a penny with a "rare" label on it. It's a 1943 copper penny in great condition. The collection supposedly was started by his father so some of the coins have been stored for over 50+ years. I've been collecting for years but never had much interest in Lincoln cents so I don't know much about them. How can I tell if this is a real 1943 copper Lincoln Cent and not a good fake? Thanks for your help!

If it sticks to a magnet it is a copper plated steel cent. John1

Check if it's attracted to a magnet or not.

There are a lot of fakes of the 1943 copper cent. Post a picture if it does not stick to a magnet.

Hey Flook, post a pic anyway. We love to see what various counterfeits look like.

I'd advocate for you posting the weight of this piece too @flook. Thx!

I'm surprised there are any steel 43's left with the number that have been plated over the years

One of the top most faked coins, it must pass all the diagnostics or it's a fake.

Flook, Use PCGS if you plan on selling it,they bring in more retail value. But post weight, photos and do the magnet test first. John1

Also, I don't mean to be picky, you might want to word your titles better. I sure I am not alone thinking this thread was *about* "large pennies" which we would all love to find!
