For the classic coin collector are your collections: 1) Circulated coins 2) Uncirculated coins 3) A mix of circulated and uncirculated
For me the vast majority are circulated coins, I do have a few in AU/BU but the vast majority are circulated. I buy circulated as they cost less are more easily available and sometimes the only option available.
So which type do you collect?

Primarily, I collect circulated coins. I do have a few uncirculated coins, but most are circulated. There is the cost element that you mentioned. But, for me there is also a historical aspect to it. It may sound corny, but a circulated coin has been somewhere and that is interesting to think about.

I go for the highest grade I can afford. Most often that ends up being XF or AU. But my whole FE/IHC set is MS.

The extent of my "classics" are what's in my 7070. To that end, almost everything is circulated because it's what I can afford. I even have a few "holed" or otherwise damaged coins in there. My collecting budget right now is almost non existent, so I have to stick within my means. The only exceptions are the Mercury dime, Walker half, and Morgan and Peace dollars as these are easily available in uncirculated for not a significant investment. The Franklin (if you want to consider it a classic) is proof. Now for modern series, I will always look for BU, but will settle for circulated (on a silver Kennedy for example) if it came to me for face.

Mostly circulated due to cost but there is a certain appeal to circulated 19th century coins - imagine whose hands may have held them.

The nostalgia of old coins!! I have mostly an AU/BU set of Peace dollars for those that were circulated I imagine the time they out. The roaring 20's, time of the Great Gatsby, prohibition , speakeasy and bootlegging followed by the Great Depression. I'm even surprised that many coins made it out of the Great Depression as that was all some people had!

My type set is all MS from Seated forward for the most part, or is pending upgrade to mint state.

I have a few uncirculated and AU coins, but the majority are well circulated. I like VF's best because they still have most of the coin's detail.
If a coin is uncirculated, it never performed its purpose as money, and is more of an unusual artifact. A heavily circulated 1881-CC Morgan is of much more interest to me than a GSA coin that sat in a sack in storage for a century.

Circulated coins. I like my classics to have a traveled history. My wallet likes that, too.

I'm in the "what I can afford" camp as well. Mostly MS for more recent classics, down to a VG8 for a Draped Bust quarter.

I actually like circulated coins better. Uncirculated coins, if not stored properly, can get spots or toning that is unattractive. Circulated coins are more interesting to me. Yes, they are more affordable also, but I just enjoy a honestly worn coin over one that hasn't been circulated.

Almost exclusively AU with extra nice eye appeal. No TPG as I prefer they remain raw.
