My name is Morgan Guy; I just joined today.

Newly armed with the Fifth Edition of the Cherry Pickers Guide, and a shiny new USB microscope, I am conducting my first $500 quarter coin roll hunt. I found a Harper's Ferry 2016 quarter with an obvious die planchet error of missing cladding on both sides of the coin. However, this is not a simple case of a "all or none" missing clad layer; instead, particularly on the reverse, the cladding is missing in a very artistic fashion (it's really kind of pretty!). John Brown's fort, especially the roof and the roof of the bell tower and the closed double door on the right, are in effect copper, while most of the rest of the reverse is normal clad.

Is this a normal kind of planchet error you have seen plenty of? Thanks for looking!

Morgan Guy

Do you know the weight of the coin?

It is not missing a cladding. Just a toned example. If it were missing a cladding, the color would be a deep red like a copper cent. The devices on Quarter have been flatten probably from a vending machine. Pretty much a normal coin with some circulation issues.

A picture of the edge would be a good addition to the post if you suspect another clad coin is this error.

I agree, but unfortunately this is only surface toning (confirm the weight as @Yokozuna mentions). In any case, welcome to CCF and I hope that we get to see more of your discoveries.
