OH No! That's not damage at all. What you got there is a very nice example of Cud error coin! These aren't super valuable errors but that actually occurs when the die breaks apart leaving an empty space for the metal to recede to. Anyways, that is definitely one of the nicer Cud error coins I have seen.

ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

@djl, that is a super Cud and a definite keeper. You should protect this coin by placing it in a 2x2. Well done!

Thanks for the replies. This box has been a lot of fun, and there's eight more roles to go. The coins that have potential are kept separate with the intention of putting them under the digital camera at the end. When I saw that coin under the magnifying glass, I was just too curious to wait for an opinion. Thanks again.

Dan" So to help you understand what is going on with your coin, it is not a coin issue, but a die issue. A part of the outside of the die has broken off the die: Here is another example of one from the same year.

I do believe it is likely a CU-1c-1984-53 as I found actual "CU-1c-1984-53" In Kenton County less than 20 minutes from Cincinnati. Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention this yesterday as I was very tired when I came along this post by accident. IMO the biggest markers for Cud 53 are the misalignment to the north-west, the "smooshiness" of the word "Liberty", and -most importantly- the shape and location of the Cud itself. While a Cud is often going to be a little variant because of the nature of metal-flow in an non-contained area but the thickness to the outter portion of it's rim...the resemblance, as far as die breaks go, is uncanny. That and the fact that it was found within a short distance of the original leaves me excited to know more of them exist :).
