This week at the shop I was asked to top off a bag of 400 AU Peace dollars to make it a $500 bag. When I do this for the Morgans...I always look at the coins to try and find some nice Top 100 coins, so I figured why not take a good look at these. When I spotted the die break, I figured it was a good coin, that kind of stuff usually lands these dollars in a Top something list ! So I paid the whopping sum of $16.50 for this particular coin and took it home to check it out. A coin that is extremely common in most grades, but not with this particular die break it seems. Of course being an eternal optimist, I checked the Top 50 list first...and within a couple minutes I was doing the happy dance I have now in my possession an apparent rarity- A field die break. After I scrolled down the page of the VAM 1F variety, I saw that two examples had sold in AU for a whopping $450 An MS-63 example went for a buy it now price of $1700. I have a coin that rivals my "Donkey Tail " . Now if I were just willing to sell it..... I think this one would grade around AU-55, just a little wear and no really distracting marks- except for that nasty extra metal on the reverse... I believe it matches the pic of the Late Die State (LDS) coin. I am a Happy Collector !

Congrats on this one! I think I found one myself today in the common silver dollar bin for $15. I'll try to post some pics.

Congrats on the purchase of a nice VAM! I think you are right on the grade but since many of the Peace dollars after 1921 and the High Relief Proofs of 1922 are somewhat weakly struck, it might have a chance at an AU-58! Frank

Ok I just got the images back from NGC on the 1922-P VAM 1F like the OP mentioned. I was pleasantly surprised with the grade of MS-62: For the OP, yours looks to be pretty close to the shape mine was in and may be worth submitting.

Quote: It took me 7 years to put this together. I'm still adding to it.... That may be the single most stunning First Post in the history of CCF. It's gotta be close to 10% of the known population of this VAM. ANACS only lists 31 graded.

I have several 1F inserts from ANACS and NGC that I still have to turn in. How's this for a second post... although I sold them to one collector about 2 years ago. I own the 1F's.
