48 numbered die marriages anyone know off hand if this is one of the 6 rare marriages. sure someone has to be a large cent expert. collecting by marriage is new to me but this is how the cherries are found. 1/8 of the marriages for this year are rare if my tired calculations are correct and it's not a bad looking cent is why I ask thank you. four days and some change till auction end.

I've never hear of a "die marriage?" I started my large cent collection many years ago, but gave up due to all the different varieties, which I could never distinguish.

I believe that "die marriage" is a fancy term for a die pair (obverse and reverse) in a context where the dies involved might have also participated in other pairings.

I don't think "marriage" is a particularly good analogy for this, but offhand I can't think of an obviously better one.

die varieties are normally defined as being the pairing of a specific obv die with a specific rev die. The term "marriage" came about because some times the pairings separate and one or both of the dies may become paired with another partner. In some cases a pair may break up, and then later "get back together again". This is called a re-marriage. Both pairing would be the same die variety, but a different die marriage. In some series you can have a pair of dies go through more than one separation and re-marriage.

It is very difficult to attribute late dates from pictures, and I don't have my references here. I may give it a try later.

thank you conder101 for you information that is why I am here did not realise die marriage wasn't the correct term need reference books on a few different things myself will have to get them soon may miss this one but will be ready for the coins yet to come. I did consider I was asking the impossible though hard to determine a variety without the coin in hand.
