This was too good to pass up, and now I'm thinking maybe that's because it is fake!? I paid just under XF40 graysheet price for this obvious AU coin; though it does appear to be an old cleaning - I thought it attractive enough. The dealer seems to be reputable on ebay, photos aren't great, and the coin looks a little rough, but with such a good strike for this tough date, I thought what the heck. But look at the font of the numbers in the date. This is not what an authentic 1923 Mercury dime looks like. Of course I noticed this after making the purchase. 153760777401Let me know if the link doesn't work and I'll post the photos separately.

Hate to say it but I think it is a fake, better to wait for others to chime in but I feel confident that its not genuine.

I know it right! Geez, I was focused only on grading details; complete blinders on to potential counterfeits. yikes. Thought I was safe in that regard since I'm not focusing on key dates.
Better take a step back: First, IS IT GENUINE?! then and only then do you consider: uncleaned/original? luster? smooth surfaces? above avg strike? eye appeal?
It was like I was rushing a little too, like "woah this looks like a really good buy on this tougher date, particularly with such a good strike!" normally, a coin like this sells quick!
I bet the seller has no idea. Looks like he's mainly stamps with fewer coins.

Yep, and the LIBERTY lettering is too thin. Oddly, the reverse appears more authentic. Though the mm might be off...just hard with the slightly blurry photos. Here's the description: "Please see photos for exact condition and please see my other listings for similar items. The writing on the sleeve is just my coin dealer's opinion of the coin, it is not an official grading. Please ask questions." Yikes, a coin dealer inspected this coin and it still got on ebay?! What the...?

The seller has 100% feedback. IMHO, he appears to be a stamp dealer who cheaply bought some fake coins; this, likely thinking them to be genuine. He has, now up for bids, what looks to me like a "mint state" fake 1914-S Buffalo nickel (reported). If he's legit, as I suspect, he might accept a return of the 1923-S. I hope Bobby131313 does his magic here ....

Quote: the coin WILL be returned. he has a 30 day free return policy. Might I suggest that you direct his attention to this thread? I'm guessing that these fakes came from the same source. He'd surely benefit from joining the CCF; this, should he continue to sell coins.

That's a one look fake, pretty bad. He has other fakes too. An 1892 Barber dime is especially bad. He has to know.

The odds tend to favor you assessment, Raymo. His 1888-S $1 looks fake, too.
Still, with 4,000+ sales, 100% feedback, his being primarily a stamp dealer, AND his offering a 30 day return, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I really don't know why people waste time counterfeiting coins that are not real high priced ones. Profit is small but I guess a profit is a profit.
