I find coins all the time with errors, ect... but damage appears as well.I have a dime with some flaws on the reverse.I know for sure the dime has some flaws that are considerd errors, yet the fact that it has been circulated, I see scratches, ect. Yesterday I found a penny that looks to have some flaws. I got all excited. Looking at the "d" in god, the "e" in we and the "t" in trust, I can clearly see the extra lines at the top of the letters. Funny though, there was what appeard to be a little stain....dirt or whatever in front the nose. I decided to get a little soap and water to clean it off so that I could look at a clean penny and make sure what I was looking at was correct, also to scan it on to the laptop. I pressed a little hard, called myself trying to shine it up, and when I looked again, I had a nice hole where the stain was
I can't win for loosing I guess, I'm wondering how or why my penny caved in on me when all I did was shine it with soap and water? now I come to question what I'm looking at with the lines above the letters.

Your stain was a hole in the copper plating that allowed the zinc underneath to corrode. When you washed it, you washed out the zinc oxide powder in the hole.

The lines you see above the letters in the motto are caused in part by strike pressure and die wear. It is not an error, just an accepted part of what happens when zinc planchets are struck with steel dies.
