Over last weekend, I got my dad and grandpa's old Whitman folders. They avidly loaded them up during the 1930's and 1940's, and then they were lost in storage boxes for years. There's nothing very special about the coins, just what they could pull out of pocket change. But it's interesting to see how they filled up.

-They didn't collect anything that was silver other than the War Nickels. They had the books but there is nothing in them.

-The best books are the Lincoln cents and the Buffalo nickels. Each of these is about 2/3 complete with many of the semi keys but none of the key dates.

-Because they were collected on the West Coast, almost all of the San Francisco coins are present, except for the key dates.

-The earliest coins are heavily worn with only a couple better than Fine. 25-30 years of hard circulation is evident.

I wonder if the dime and other books were just stripped and spent decades ago when they lost interest?
Rest in Peace

When he was in his 70's my dad started collecting the annual proof sets. A few contained silver and gold, but most were the base metal sets. My grandpa gave me his small accumulation of silver 50 years ago, containing one worn 1878-S Morgan. Collecting silver coins didn't interest either of them.
