Highest value 1938 S Mercury Dime

I didn't see any topic on this one, it went way over estimate auction value, finest known graded by PCGS MS 68+.

Just wow! It looks like it and the '31-S mentioned in the same article ended up in the D.L. Hansen registry set....

$600 in MS67, and $360,000 in MS68!

That prices make no sense to me, but one person is happy to pay that much. To each their own.
Rest in Peace

Well, google has DL Hansens net worth at 4 billion dollars, so what is 360k to him? Off my head I'm thinking less than 1/2 of 1 percent

It's hard to say, the price was getting run up on him so if you remove him from the bidding it's hard to see that getting that price again. Happened on another one too which I think was also in that sale.

If that thing sold for that much, my #1 set of those should be worth Billions of dollars.

Any way to find out if the winner actually paid? The article was written only 6 days after auction end.

There's no fake sales at Legend auctions and you have to be vetted to bid to that level.

He got run up as has been discussed on various forums/blogs for months

@justcarl,

Looking through PCGS pop report, there's only one that graded MS 68+FB, and twenty graded at MS 68 FB. I would say some just want to have the number 1 in his collection.

Means nothing. I've seen many, many Mercury dimes in really high grades and not in a slab so PCGS doesn't even know they exist. I really don't think anyone is going to spend that much on that coin.

Ok, thanks. Guess I'm a little behind the curve. "Run up" is the biggest understatement since Noah said, "It looks like rain."
