Hello! I am curious if this penny looks authentic or is a fake? And if it is real what it is valued at? It is magnetic, I am waiting to hear back about the weight. Any info is helpful! I do not want to get ripped off and fingers crossed it is legit so I can pay off my student debt! Edited by bamagama 01/05/2020 4:37 pm

Not to burst your dreams of hitting it big in the coin lottery, the chances of you finding a steel 1944 Lincoln Cent are pretty much 0, and this one looks like it was plated (pretty badly at that), so IMO you have not hit the coin lottery. You have a badly plated 1944 LWC worth 1 cent.

When you say magnetic, Try a 1943 Steel cent and see if it jumps like the steel cent to a magnet? Condor101 mentioned this. It does look like a plated copy of this coin. Note the Pencil neck and the damage on the 'TA' on States on the reverse. Fake!

Weight sounds correct you should send it in for grading.

Also thank you for the warm welcome! I've been dabbling in exploring coins since I like to poke around flea markets and I'm just now getting into realizing there can be some really cool treasures to find! This is the photo my friend sent when I asked if it was magnetic. I'm not home currently so can't verify it in my hands (argh! I want to see it up close!) But I just asked for them to weigh it and send a photo for double confirmation. I'm not sure which weight is the proper one? Can the weight be correct but it still be not worth much if it's plated? (Or is that an impossible combo and I'm just being dumb? Lol)

I'll post again what I stated above. The coin looks like a bad plating job. Since the weight seems correct we have 1 of 2 things. 1) the coin is a real 1944 steel cent and it's worth a small fortune or 2) it's a fake and worth 0
Now again the chances of you finding a real 1944 steel cent in the wild is pretty much 0 só number 2 looks more likely but you'll never really know until you have it authenticated which will cost you around $100.
Your choice. If it comes back real (I'm pretty certain it won't) you'll have hit the coin lottery and be able to pay off your student debt and still be able to get a Tesla (model 3 not the S). But again your chances are still pretty much 0, but it's up to you.

to CCF I'll say this much, if I had a genuine steel 1944 cent it would not be out of a holder and stuck to a magnet. I'd at least have it in a 2x2 for some protection. That reverse rim looks funny to me. Wonder how much this "friend" is asking from you for it. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't.

I think I'll find a nice cabin in the woods, not really a Tesla fan lol!
I really appreciate the insight, I'm still very new to collecting and don't really know squat (for example at first glance, this coin looks normal; I would have no idea it was plated since I flatly don't know what to look for to recognize that yet so again, thank you for the clarification!
I also just realized one of the photos my friend sent might very well be a screenshot from a completely different YouTube video so... something is starting to smell a little scammy... Still waiting on the dated photo showing the weight, I will post it in here when I get it!

It looks plated , We get these a lot on CCF ,guys think they found a rare and valuable coin and it turns out to be just a counterfeit or a plated coin . Try that magnet test again like coop said . That should be the determining factor .

Unfortunately, looks like a poorly plated 1944 copper cent.
