Just cherry-picked this and posted it on the VAM forum. What grade would you give this? I'm guessing around AU-58. Edited by QuarterHoarder72 01/05/2020 7:52 pm

Your photo makes it look like the coin has a white haze to the surface on both sides. This makes me think it could've been dipped and not rinsed properly.
Having said that I am at AU details.

I'll say AU-58 "slider unc", not sure if cleaned. Pretty baggy.

Thanks guys! Appreciate the thoughts. @MontCollector I've never seen an improperly dipped coin before. Would the coin still exhibit cartwheel luster if incorrectly dipped?

Quote: . @MontCollector I've never seen an improperly dipped coin before. I did not say improperly dipped I said it may not have been rinsed properly after a dip leaving a white haze from whatever it was dipped in. Acetone that is not 100% pure can leave this kind of haze after a dip, and I am sure there is other stuff that will do it too. Yes if the haze is light enough it can leave some of the cartwheel. I have had a couple Morgans that looked fine in hand but once my camera lighting hit the coin the haze from being cleaned or dipped popped right out.

Thanks for the explanation! Just curious, would that "detail" my coin if it was improperly rinsed?

Quote: Just curious, would that "detail" my coin if it was improperly rinsed? If that is what the haze is from and it can not be removed before sending it in, I would think yes. Most likely it would be a Details (Cleaned) designation. Not sure if another dip in 100% acetone will remove the haze or not. Having said that $30 for an 1882 O/S Morgan dollar is a great deal IMO. I think you did good either way with this purchase.

Your coin has a typical New Orleans strike. The gash on the upper neck and adjoining hair curl is a minor distraction. In terms of technical grade, I see it as an AU-58. I don't really see any upside in submitting it to a TPG. You would have a risk of details designation or having the coin drop-graded to compensate. I think you could get close enough to full value raw to make a slab unnecessary. As a raw coin on a bourse floor, I see it trading as a solid slider, but at an AU-55 price to compensate for the bag marks and lack of luster. The O/S is in solid demand, and your OMM pops. I could see this one going in the $80-ish range raw. At $30, you have a great cherrypick.
