I'm at 64, maybe 65, on this coin. The obverse marks on the cheek and neck hurt it as does the scratch between the 8 and 9 o'clock position on the reverse.
Still, a very pretty coin! Love the sunset toning!

I'll guess the label says MS64. Nice toning indeed!

the 85(O) is known for about average strikes. this one is AVG+ with some decent details around the ear and eagle breast. the toning is a little spotty so it wont help the eye appeal much. MS65 in my book

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally, not keen on the toning. 64 or 65, though. What sort of plastic is the old holder made of?

The grade doesn't matter to me, I bought the coin for the toning so in a way it's better because I got this at a great price

the only thing I can think of on this grade is that the graders must have noted that the luster was not there under the toning on the high points and that the toning was broken. I'm not seeing any numerous scratches or anomalies that would lower it to that grade

I thought it looked like a 63 before seeing the grade. The luster is not there and while its a nice piece it should not grade higher than 64.

Luster hiding under the toning. That is why it is hard for us to see luster in the pictures. Helps to provide a reason to prefer un-toned coins.

Quote: Helps to provide a reason to prefer un-toned coins. one big reason unless you are well schooled in toners and have the coin in hand it is very difficult to determine whats under it. you cant just go by the grade on the slab. this is why I stay away from them for the most part
