I recently bought this Morgan from ebay, and I was wondering what y'all think the grade might be. But first, my opinion. I'm not sure whether it's due to poor strike or circulation, but there seems to be a slight lack of finer details on Liberty's hair from her forehead to her ear. In addition, the eagle's breast, from the images I'm seeing, don't seem to have very many visible feathers. However, the breast, hair, and other areas of usual wear are quite reflective, as if the luster is still fully present. Lastly, the reverse has some deep scrapes on the eagle's breast, and the obverse has heavy blemishes (I'm not sure what to call the almost pinprick-like damage to Liberty's cheek). Conservatively, I would guess it's in the AU range. What does everyone else think?

I would say AU-50 details at best, from a past cleaning (or dipping) and retoning.

So you don't believe this is the original toning? Could you tell me why you think that? I'm new to toning, trying to get some tips

Marks on the cheek could be bag marks. Which don't technically hurt the grade. As this coin wouldn't be MS anyway. But they can detract from the eye appeal and value when so many of them end up on her face. So yeah, prob an AU details.

Thank you Lancek! I agree, it can't be MS, but I believe it's got to be AU simply because of the luster (or at least what I think is luster). I'll have to check the luster when it arrives to see, though. I'm just happy because I won it for $67 and the Red Book value says an AU-50 is worth $95. Score!

Cleaning really attacks the original cartwheel mint luster. Can't really see any of the original luster in this case, unless it is hiding under the toning around the lettering.
Yes, it is a little beat up, but it is still far away from not including in most collections.

But if it gets a details grade that knocks the value down quite a bit from a standard AU 50. Of course the rainbow toning adds some value, to the right collector. So you probably did ok.

AU Details. Tossup whether it gets a 91, 92, or 95 code.
I think your purchase price was right in the ballpark.
