I am really loving your coins NumisRob - Those Maundy sets are beautiful, can I ask how you got them, because they are as scarce as hen's teeth. Meanwhile I have a few more 1902 coins (Been slow today as a pound of junk silver arrived and its a good mix - lots of Swiss and French silver and some interesting old Egyptian and Turkish coins too). This next lot may appeal to paralyse as its "Everyman" American coinage   A very nice but stained Indian Head penny (gVF to EF but a green invasion going on) and a honest but fairly worn Barber quarter (I am guessing its gVG as it has 4 full letters of Liberty and some detail on feathers). It's the everyman got his quarter payrise at work quarter. Again as I get more serious and a better job - expect my American selection to improve (All the Mercury dimes and Buffalos I had were from a lucky score). Edited by Princetane

Leaving France for a short while to go north, to Sweden. No art nouveau stuff on coins here, now or later. King and motto, coat of arms and denomination, that's enough. But it is gold. Sweden 1902, 20 kronor. Weight, size and gold content is close to that of a $5 Liberty Head (or a Sovereign, if you prefer). 1902 is the last year with regular gold coin mintage in Sweden, except for two single issues in 1920 and 1925.  At this time Sweden and Norway are united (but have separate coins, the union lasts until 1905). The text on the obverse reads Oscar II Sweden's and Norway's king. The reverse shows his motto: The well-being of the brother peoples. (After 1905, he changed it to The well-being of Sweden.) |

It's a beautiful coin, but those Norwegians yearned to be free. Before the forced union with Sweden in 1814, they had been pretty much run by Denmark since 1380.   Here is another Egyptian classic - 5 Millemes or Half Piastre, as the silver coin would be teensy, this is cupronickel, date is year 27 of Abdul Hamid'IIs Reign (AH 1293 + 26 = AH 1319 - 1901/1902AD). The next Egyptian coins of mine will be much more substantial. Edited by Princetane

She had found them in a drawer and couldn't remember how she got them. She gave them to me as I was the only person in the family who collected coins. That was about 25 years ago! The coins were all loose in a tin with a few Maundy oddments and some miscellaneous pre-decimal junk! My other sets were all made up. I look for partial sets and then try to find the missing coins. This is relatively easy with late Victorian and Edward VII sets, but harder before about 1880 and after 1908! My George IV set took several years to complete!
