Arkle I love that medal! As we move back into the 1890s, I will show some of the coins from the regime that caused the need for it.   My last Edward, this 1902 darkened but decent farthing. Once we get to 1901, we get to Queen Victoria - although my first 1901 piece is not showing her, but the future King George V! |

NumisRob, I am thinking maybe your elderly relative knew or had someone in her family who may have been presented the coins off King Edward and Queen Victoria.
Having that Historic connection would really increase their sentimental value. Do you do family history at all, because that could be an interesting challenge. As you know each pensioner got the same amount of Maundy pence according to the Monarchs age, so in 1902 , each old person got 61 pence in Maundy coins and the king was 61 (Possibly 60 if they were counting the fact he was born in November 1841, making him still 60 in April 1902).
If you had a bag with them, that would be even groovier and hammer home that family connection as your coins look unworn and very fresh (Apart from 120 years in a drawer I guess).
Erafjel - the 1/3 farthing replcaed tiny coins used in Malta during the times of the Knights of Malta (1530 - 1798) I think called tallerio or something and were like "Mites" which were used by the poor for purchases like veges and meat for the pot.
Even smaller was the ¼ farthing used in Ceylon and this I think was replacing some teensy copper dot coins used in Indian/Sri Lankan kingdoms.
There is evidence that ½ farthings were used in the UK before 1850, but generally the farthing was the smallest coin and by 1900 it would maybe buy an apple or a sprig of parsley. even the cheapest papers and broadsides cost a Halfpenny.
The wikipedia article alludes to unit known as mite worth 1/64th of a penny (1/16th of a farthing), but none exist.
