They issued their own currency of pennies to shillings between 1935 and 1945. All has holes in them, as the native New Guineans strung them up and wore them around their necks etc! - sorry hazy photo Shillings were very beautiful and made out of Sterling silver, the 3ds and 6d were less so and made out of Cupronickel and Pennies were bronze.
