Hello, I found this old state seal and would please like some help to identify its age. And what its use would be for like seal wax on a document ? It measures 1 3/8" and there is a raised center seal that is about 1" wide .

@hertz, it looks like there might be two letters punched in the back. Is that correct? And if so, are they TB or what exactly? The pattern of toning makes me think that folks touched the center part--maybe this came from a rostrum or some other furniture?

My first thought was that it once had two loops or "ears" on top that are broken off. They may have had rings that attached to a pinback bar. The bar might have had something like "minutemen", "committee", "souvenir" or any number of other wordings within the bar. From what I read, this State coat of arms looks like it's the sixth and most recent one for Massachusetts but it looks pretty old. Sometime after 1885.

my thoughts are that you have a watch or key fob...the loop that retained the leather strap is broken from it at the top...hard to tell from pics

a true wax seal is intaglio and in reverse

Thanks to all. yes I did look and there are two broken areas at the top. and that would suggest maybe it had a pin back . There is shiny gold color on the two broken areas very small. I do not think a fob would have two areas for attachment though ? any thoughts . I thought maybe this was a civil war era medal of some sort but I can not seem to find a comparison., hard to say. anyway thanks all for helping out

Ok interesting--I hadn't noticed the areas of broken metal. Could this be a saddle medallion?
