Is this some type of Mint Error? If so, what kind of error is it and what would cause it?

to CCF. Not an error,PMD. How it happened? Looks like it was squeezed with a metal washer? John1

Well, the reverse looks completely normal. No damage at all. I'm not sure if it left the mint like that or if it was damaged later.

It sure looks like it was on some kind of lathe. But regardless, it didn't happen at the mint.

It's a user error. Someone did that on purpose. That coin is worth 1 cent. Spend it.

Metal lathe - not chucked up properly ? My old lathe could have probably done this.

AGREE: Spend it, throw it back into the wild with hopes it lands in the hands of some inquisitive youngster who will want to know more about it and it leads to a lifelong interest! DISAGREE: This coin is a great conversation piece! I'd keep it to show off (I'm weird that way). I do try to practice what I preach. I occasionally put an Indian Head penny into a roll or those "take a penny/leave a penny" things in restaurants that have a cashier, with hopes that someday one will end up in the hands of someone who will treasure it. It's just a little gesture, sort of "paying it forward" type of a thing that costs very little. You never know how such a little thing might effect someone.

I do the same thing with Wheaties & your occasional ugly IHC. I haven't found an Indian Head in twenty five years. Find silver coins once in a blue moon - usually a dime. Its kind of neat to get some of them back in the mix.

I put $2 bill into circulation :) love seeing people getting them and looking at them and then put them to the side to save.

hfjacinto, my next 1877 IHC will be put in the mail to you! Do the banks still have $2 bills to hand out? Years ago I'd go to garage sales and pay in the gold Presidential dollar coins... they made people's day!
