I went to the bank today to get my daily withdrawal of dollar coins, and among those were 3 1981 Suzies, from all three of the mints. According to my Red Book, they were only released in sets and not for general circulation.

They are reallllly shiny, and the edges are still showing that glowing red copper color.

Are these worth something more than their face values? I'm not a SBA collector, so I don't really need them. So, when I have 50 posts, these are going on the market.

Welcome WD1040 to CCF. The prices range from $1.50-$2 depending on grade. I will be waiting for them 41 more posts from now. I seem to like them. I don't know why. Coindexter

Yes, the 1981s are worth a bit more than the other SBAs(provided that they are still fully mint state with no rub) since they were only released in mint sets with a mintage of about 3 million- about $4 or so is average retail although the best way is to just buy a mint set which will be about the same as three individual SBAs

Collector 'disinterest' in the SBA dollar during the 1980's did lead to some of the 1981's being put into circulation back then. I got a few of the 1981's in circulation myself in the 80's, but I spent them.

I'd say yours were put into circulation just recently (since you got all three of them). Whomever it was that 'dumped' them should have kept them in the Mint Set and sold it online! (even $4-5 beats $3, you know!)

PS: Coindexter will be happy to know that I did save the only 1981 SBA that I've yet received from my Light Rail dollar coin change (in 2006). The only way you'd ever receive a 1981 SBA in your Light Rail change is if an individual paid for a ticket with that coin, in that machine, earlier that day. The ticket machines can and do dispense coins received in payment for tickets (another reason why what you receive in change is 'random'). An armored car guy who fills those machines with dollar coins told me that the Fed here didn't have any bags of '81 SBA's in storage, thus
any 1981 SBA's that anyone finds in Light Rail change would have to have been from a rider's ticket purchase.

They are worth $3.50 to $4 each.

The '81 mint set had the highest of all mint set productions but there were more made than sold. The excess were cut out of the sets and the dollars were sold to dealers. If memory serves there were more than 100,000 of each mint. The going rate was quite low.

The San Francisco is a pistol to find nice. Only about a third of them are even attractive and about 1% are a nice near gem or better.

biokemist6 said that the coin should not have a "rub."

What's a rub? Is it signs of polishing?

Rub as in very light wear/luster breaks from briefly mingling with other coins in a pocket or cash register. A coin that has changed hands in commerce four or five times would fit this description. Since you got them all together, chances are that you are the only the second person to handle them.
