I am sad that this coin has human-made scratches. It is the first one I've seen for a 1943 Steel cent. Kind of a fun find anyway...

Wow that's got to be pretty rare! I've never seen or heard of one these until now. Incredible find!

Actually that is a struck through a capped die. If it were a die cap it would look more like this: Because the die was capped with a previous planchet, it prevented the devices to strike up. Sometimes it comes off slowly: Or sometimes there are several planchets that were struck onto each other: Note the rim area is not rounded, but looks like a pizza pan from the die cap preventing the rim to for correctly. As they keep striking more coins, they start to thin and fall off the dies: Sometimes rotate: uploaded/coop/struck_through_late_stage_die_caps_Mike_Diamond_AAA.jpg So it is a struck through a capped die or through a die cap. But it is not a die cap.

Thanks, Coop, for the education and clarification. I've been doing this error and variety thing for awhile now and never really understood the difference until today. You truly are a Bedrock of this community. It's been kind of a weird day in that it's been years since I found a struck through capped die and today I found two of them in two different ebay lots that came in today. Have you seen many of the 1943 struck through capped die errors like this one? It would be interesting to know. Thanks again for all you do!

I have seen one of these before for sale, and it was expensive, but can't remember grade or what they were asking.

As a side-note, does anyone else see the pictures all squashed by Sudz's huge avatar?
(I don't think avatars are supposed to even be able to be that large, which might be what's causing the squashing. Dunno if that's a bug or whatever.)

Sudz coin is a Die Cud. Struck through a capped die.

Definitely much more expensive than a regular. If I'm not mistaken I saw that one for sale too and it was outrageously priced!
