I found this 1943 p silver Jefferson nickel a few days ago and noticed the mint mark looks different, has anyone seen anything like this before? The top of the P looks like a small Denver mint, I am assuming it is just damage.

It looks strangely precise for damage, an odd alteration if it was on purpose. I often wonder if US Mint employees do stuff like this on purpose for a laugh.

I don't see any Over mint marks for that year(Didn't look that hard) but it does have some resemblance to this RPM http://varietyvista.com/05%20JN%20R...3PRPM008.htm

However constructed, this is clearly a fabrication.

I agree that it looks purposeful. The lower serif of the D was even replicated.

The dent in the coin to the west of the mintmark is probably part of the same event that formed the "D".
Instead of the metal from the leg of the P being displaced out from a hit , it was displaced up and formed a lower serif for what gives the appearance of a small D.
Extremely cool !

Larger images might show us more. It maybe flattening on one side of the coin and the opposite be pushed out from damage on the reverse. Or it might be damage from contact with a coin wrapper. Or 1000 other things. The more we can see, the more we might figure out what happened.

Clearly just a circulation hit that made the P look like a D.
