I'm a light weight coin collector. I found a 1978 penny that I suspect someone has been marked on just for fun. To the right of Lincoln's face, just above the 1978 date is the shape of West Virginia. The the two letters inside of the shape are WV. Any ideas how that came to be or even if it's worth anything more than a penny? Thanks

@txp, first welcome to CCF. Second, I believe that all 50 states have been used as the subject for counterstamped cents like yours. We see various ones here fairly often. This process is done after the coin leaves the mint so shouldn't increase the value, but to someone who is looking for this specific state, they might pay a smidge more than 1¢.

Keith and Spence, very helpful. Thank you. I have never seen this before on any coin (and I'm not 20 yrs old ;). I looked at the link you sent. So anyone for numerous reasons can mark on a coin? If I read correctly, the interesting part would be the historical reason for the marking.

@Txprincess, yes anyone can mark/stamp anything on a coin for any reason whatsover.

In fact, with billions of coins among millions of people for decades, anything IMAGINABLE has been done to the one cent coins.

There may not be any particular reason other than just a desire to create an interesting novelty and make a profit. Sometimes coins are marked for reasons of pure vandalism. There may be political or other reasons (masonic symbols are common), but aside from accident, pure commerce is the likely reason for most.

This is legal as long as there is no intent to defraud.
