Has anyone else ever seen this error? I ask because it appears that I have the only extant example of this significant die error. The mint has no record of this, which may simply mean that they don't track such things or at least did not do so in 2009.

Hmm. That's very unusual.

Mike Diamond is Why the error is called MD-7. It it is on http://www.error-ref.com/2011-02-14/ and Mike's Coin World article on the coin is at https://www.coinworld.com/news/prec...polishi.htmlMike was kind enough to examine the coin (already in its PCGS slab) back in late 2010 or early 2011 (my memory is not great). He was most helpful in identifying the cause of the error as a proof die polishing error. The mint wasn't any help in determining if any other coins escaped or if so how many.

After reading that letter, I'm wondering if you have/had any strange/new vehicles with heavily tinted windows parked around or near your home?..... Edited: what grade is the coin?

PCGS refused to attribute it as an error because it had not been properly recognized as one by the error community. I may spend the money one of these days to get it properly attributed, possibly as the error discovery coin. It was slabbed back in 2010 so its provenance is secure.

Here are two very close up images. The first is focused on the letter A and gives a great view of the frost. The second is focused on the normal field and gives a slightly better view of the field step caused by the proof polishing error.

Is it raised or incuse on the fields? The last two images barely shows up on the fields, making me wonder if it is incuse on the coin?

The thin crescent at the top of the field is raised on the coin, caused by material removed from the die. Mike Diamond personally examined the coin and called it a Proof Polishing Mishap ( http://www.error-ref.com/2011-02-14 ). You can see that the tops of the devices are thinned best in the "TAT" image. I have lots of images and can take more if you like.

@ch, to actually answer your question, I haven't seen this type of error before. Sorry that I am not helping you, but I will say that I am learning from this thread, so thank you for that.

After a full decade since I received my coin and no others showing up, it makes me wonder if more actually left the mint but the sets they were in may have been returned as damaged by the recipients, or just tucked away sight unseen.
