Yup, 3 cent silver. 3 cent coins were popular when postage cost 3 cents.

Where did you find it? While they were reasonably plentiful in their day (1850s and 60s mainly), it's a very unusual coin to find in circulation given it's age and small size.

Can't tell from the tiny photos but the date appears gone. However from the star I think this a Type I coin which means it's an 1851, 1852, or 1853.
Was this a metal detector find?

That's a pretty cool find!

An interesting fact about these is that they are the smallest silver coin the US has ever issued. Back when these were in circulation, people used to refer to them as "fish scales" because of their small size!

Lightest coin we ever issued but not the smallest, the type 1 gold dollars were smaller ( Three Cent were 14 mm, gold dollar was 13 mm) but heavier due to the higher density of gold.

This is a pretty spectacular find given it's age and just the fact it's a denomination that hasn't been issued for well over 100 years. The only one of these "trimes" I've got is the same variant as the one here, an 1853.
