It's been too long ago to remember exactly, but I suppose I bought this because a 1904 P is a scarcer year/mint mark, and it looked like a decent uncleaned original in circulation AU coin at the time. I think it still does except for one thing. Back then I really didn't understand the ding a ring ding (pun intended) could exact on both the desirability and the value ...... I still don't understand so hope some that do can educate me about that.
Opposite the second star up to the left from the date on the obverse, you can see that ding. It's not so bad that it's deformed the edge much, but still noticeable enough to show in the picture. Other than that I think the grade I gave it back then might be about right, maybe a 40.
XF45 The coin does have some rim dings, but does not appear to be enough damage to details the coin. On the obverse the rim ding to the left of the date has altered the denticles. Rim dings that happen in normal circulation or during the normal minting process will not details a coin. If the coin is determined to be damaged by the rim ding, then, it will details the coin. For example XF Details rim damage.
Obverse EF-40, reverse EF-45. I don't think the rim dings will detail the coin, but I could see a TPG resolving doubts lower on the grade as an eye appeal adjustment. Net grade EF-40.
I think the overall look could keep it in the XF45 bucket. the ding on the rim is hard to tell. a rim photo would help determine but I think it grades straight
