$25, from an old Whitman Deluxe. I'm thinking MS62 but maybe a slider unc. The toning is reddish/gold, stronger on the reverse, with some green iridescence towards the rim. Opinions appreciated.

Two different sets of photos (stronger lighting vs more natural lighting.) The luster cartwheels naturally in hand, but the toning covers it up a bit.

If it's a slider I'm not picking up on it in your images. I agree with MS62 and could argue MS63. Nice pick for the money!

Could be a slider, but if not, then I'd say easily 63.

the 97(P) are typically sharp and bold. this one falls a little short especially the eagle breast. about 75% of luster appears to be there but the photos are a little obscured with the lighting to be sure. fairly clean cheek and minimal rub on the high points of the wheat leaves and tips of the leaves below the cotton balls & hair. on the reverse minor rub on the wing tips, breast and talons.

I played with the lighting, contrast, color, and sharpness of your photos. I can see the strike softness, but I can't see any signs of circulation. The bag marks aren't that heavy, and I could see this one trading as MS-63. The toning makes it more attractive than many of the gun metal gray 1897s that I see. It's nice to see a nice original coin. Decent coin!
