I came across some vintage rolls today at the bank and am excited to see what I might find. There was some contamination stains on several of the wraps so I decided to open a couple of those first. First off there are no coins older than 1970 and 1/3 are LWC! It looks like the steel pennies have reacted to the contaminant the most and that has spread to other coins in the roll and I had to pry off the coins adjacent. I'm sure the steel coins are toast but would acetone help the other coins not so corroded? or are all coins affected going to spread the damage and they need to be kept separate?

Do you mean no coins YOUNGER than 1970? Otherwise "Older than 1970" can't be LWC.

Not certain what your "contamination stains" are. The steel pennies in your photos are showing rust, which is caused from exposure to oxygen and moisture for a long period of time. Copper does not rust, however, it does corrode. Copper oxidation is a type of corrosion. Copper oxidation develops a verdigris colouration (blue-green).

How do you remove verdigris from coins? A product called VerdiCare (sometimes available from a CCF member BadThad) should help. Will acetone remove verdigris from coins? No, the damage is already done. Will acetone help protect your undamaged coins? Acetone is useful for removing any organic substance, so yes. It won't remove any pitting or damage from corrosion, but for protection of undamaged surfaces, yes, it should do the trick!

First of all take all coins out of all rolls . The rusted steel cents you can throw them in your cull box . Your coppers if they are not to bad with Verdigris ,by all means use the Verdi-Care . However the ones that are badly corroded will probably wind up being spenders unless they happen to be key or semi-key wheat cents .

Thanks for the responses.

Yes Merclover, I meant to say no coins with dates above the 1960's so yes no coins younger than that.

I will get the coins separated asap and try some verdi-care. I checked that link to ebay T-bop but it looks like there are non available. Any other options on places to purchase?

As I mentioned in my write up, CFF member BadThad makes it (I think in small batches, but not certain on this). If you PM him, you can have a direct contact to VerdiCare.

Verdi Care won't affect rust in a positive way. They are just steel wheat cents when they look like that.
