I haven't logged on here in forever but one thing that prompted me to return here was the fact that I began collecting coins seriously about 5 years ago at this time of the year. One thing I remember happening was the fact that wheat pennies were uncommon, but generally findable in circulation if you kept looking. Now, it seems like they've all been hoarded since I can't remember the last time I found a Wheat penny at all. I'm not complaining about anything but it's just an observation I made that I thought I'd share.

I don't go out of my way to CRH, so most of the money I find comes from the vending machine coin returns at school and the Coinstar reject bins in the rare instance that there's actually money there. Back when I worked at the pharmacy (from September 2015 till May of last year), I found wheat pennies so often, I wouldn't even trade it out if it was from the 1950s since I rarely remembered to keep change on me and usually didn't feel like getting a pocket full of change from trading a dollar for an equal amount in coins when I was counting down the registers. Now it's the exact opposite, I haven't found a Wheat penny in MONTHS, not even in the Coinstar rejects when checking.

Is this something that's across the board where others are finding less wheats than 5 years ago, or is it just a regional thing?

It's been consistent for me over many years--about 1 every 600-700 coins. Commercially-wrapped and customer-wrapped rolls are my sources. Had one massive find a few years ago--a few customer-wrapped rolls solid with wheats.

Since my frequency of cash purchases has declined the last 10+ years, I don't come into contact will 'change' much these days.

Perhaps the fact that you no longer work in the pharmacy has something to do with it?
Rest in Peace

I think the problem is their being hoarded by not only collectors but the general public . Lets face it; a heck of a lot of people out there all over the country knows what Wheat Cents are and look like . Now take into consideration how many are held by dealers all over the world , how many lost for any reason , etc.

People have had 60+ years to pull them out of change, so yes, they are few and far between at this point.
