Hey guys, this is the first Canadian large cent from the 1800's I've owned/purchased just recently from ebay on somewhat of a hunch noticing the broken "O" in Victoria amongst other little things, it was a straight forward ebay ad with nothing stating it was special by any means, just that it was an "Old Victorian 1881 large cent" so I threw a bid in and won it for $8.50 shipping included.

When I received it I finally got the chance to look at it up close and under the scope, and I was hoping you guys could take a look at these photos and let me know what it is I'm seeing.

Photos of the Leaves on the Reverse seem to show either some sort of Doubling or something else but since I have no idea how exactly they made the coins back then. It does have the "Double" last "1" in the date that Coins and Canada has but to me it doesn't really strike me as doubling but it could be.

Here are some photos of the letting on the Obverse of the coin, with Red arrows pointing to the areas in question.

On the "N" in "CANADA" and "REGINA" there seems to be again, maybe some sort of doubling?.

Here is the broken "O" in Victoria" along with the last "A" that seems to be missing its serif.

And here is the last "A" in "GRATIA" with some weird blob of metal above the serif on the right.

That 2nd A shows doubling to me for sure. The 1881 cent has a plethora of different doubling expressions throughout its making. That could be doubling on the stems as well but with the major doubling available for this date I would easily overlook the stem doubling myself. Nice broken O example.

On the reverse leaves and stems I see a combination of Die Deterioration and touch-up / re-engraving. Tough to tell without seeing the entire coin to estimate grade.

Thank you for the replies guys, like it was pointed out I've heard a lot of the 1881's show doubling and have minor errors here and there so I was not sure if this is just a common coin all together (errors included). I mainly purchased it because I liked it for what it is and I wanted one for my collection, but I just want to make sure I label it correctly.

Here are some full photos of the Obverse & Reverse along with "CAN" and "INA" from "REGINA" so you can see the "N's" and the weird extra metal beside them better.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase, and especially surprised of how good of condition the rim is for its age, I was expecting it to have some nicks and dings but there were none.

Welcome to 1881. There is a ton of variation within this year. It's hard to find a coin that looks 'normal'. Enjoy your find, the next 1881 you buy will most likely be different.

I agree with what Dan (above) said. The 1881's used many 1876 working dies early on, repunched to clean them up. The '81's are almost as fun to collect as the 1859's. Many many variations exist.
