Recently received 5 VF-EF Morgans bought from ebay and was putting them in round plastic holders, happened to be rotating them in the holders and noticed one of the coins (1895-O) had the reverse turned 180 degrees from the others, the eagle was upright, not upside down. Did a little research and figure it is likely a fake as 180 degree rotations are very rare in Morgans, but to be sure any suggestions on the best place to have it checked out?
I don't think posting photos on the forum is going to help in this case. I have read that counterfitters slice these coins in two and then meld them back together to create a rarity and it takes an expert on close examination to determine if they are authentic or not. I think there is a 95% probability this is a fake, but on the 5% chance it is not, who should it be sent to for authentication, what specific instructions should be included and is it worth spending the money to do this?
I think it best if you posted pics of the front and back and edge. We could save you a bunch of money. The cheapest place to send it is ANACS. You would be surprised how well the Morgan pros here on CCF can help. John1
It is a fake, underweight and too thick, diameter was ok. Found all 5 from ebay sale were fakes, all were New Orleans "O" mint, 4 were common dates and were fine to XF, not uncirculated. Beware it appears they are now faking common date Morgans.
