I had had my eyes on this 1794 cent for a while and ultimately bid and won the coin at auction a few days ago. The sellers pictures are far from great, making it difficult to properly assess the quality of the surfaces, color and other details. However, I could see enough to give myself the green light, specially since it is a very scarce die pairing, Sheldon-45, rated R-5+. Interestingly, the Condition Census for S-45 includes (per Breen) 5 examples in VG10, so I am confident/hopeful that this one will rank high in the CC. On the downside, given the current situation, it looks like I will have to wait for while before receiving the coin... I fully understand why this is, though. So, in the meantime I will have to continue admiring this example based on the auction pictures, (and I am liking what I am seeing!) Edited by GERMANICVS 03/19/2020 04:30 am

Amazing condition--well done. I wonder if you can share some of the provenance?

Thank you, John1 and Spence.
I don't know what the provenance is, but am assuming it is of European origin. I will ask the auction house as I am curious to know where this one has been hiding.

As a long time EAC collector, I have come to accept the fact that it is often difficult to reconcile grade and 'affordability of price' in one coin: as a result, most of my early coppers tend to be either scarce, but in lower grades, or, in better grade but common(ner) varieties. This is one case where I think I managed to achieve both. Very excited about this one.
