The "W" you're seeing is the designer Adolph A. Weinman's initials not a mint mark.

No such thing exists. Though the West Point Bullion Depository (and later Mint after 1988) existed since about 1937, it was just that for the longest time, a reserve for precious metals. Even today, minus the W quarters, it doesn't regularly produce circulating coinage. I once made the same mistake regarding Mercury dimes, Weinman's initials are right above the date exactly where the mintmark would be on a Roosevelt dime, so I assumed it meant West Point, but nah.

I find it interesting that Weinman's initials are incuse on the half dollar, but relief on the dime. Anyone know the reason?
