Annoying Marks On Coins Made By Searchers

ijn1944 Bedrock of the Community United States 19178 Posts	Posted 03/21/2020 11:22 am As a roll searcher, I come across all kinds of interesting and not-so-interesting stuff. One thing that bothers me a bit are marks left on coins by roll searchers. Most of us have seen Kennedy halves 'marked' by silver searchers. Well, it appears there are searchers/hunters marking quarters in their quest for W mints. The attached photo is representative of what I've been finding lately. This coin was pulled from a customer wrapped roll, where five 2019D San Antonio quarters were marked using what appears to be a black Sharpie. Report this Post to the Staff

chrisof4 Valued Member United States 274 Posts	Posted 03/21/2020 11:55 am I never saw the point to this. I see marks on a small percentage of coins, and I seldom see the same marks twice. If the goal is to skip past a coin previously examined, then it seems like the effort to mark all coins as they are examined outweighs the benefit of occasionally examining a coin twice. It's common for many food service workers to mark tip coins with nail polish or markers. Report this Post to the Staff
ijn1944 Bedrock of the Community United States 19178 Posts	Posted 03/21/2020 2:45 pm Could be from tips; however, in total, I've come across 12 2019D quarters with Sharpie marks--only 2019s, no other year. I've searched thousands of quarter rolls over a few decades, this is the very first time I've come across marks like these. Report this Post to the Staff

Many hunters only search for dates, obvious errors, silver, and things like W mint marks. I on't trust most of them to be looking for most varieties, especially ones that aren't listed in the CPG. So if their intention is to save other CRHers time, I certainly don't trust their judgement without examining all the coins for myself. Report this Post to the Staff
