I am wondering is this a die crack or what is going on with this penny. Line goes from the edge to Lincolns nose and another tiny line that goes from the edge to the tip of the 4. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks to all.

Well John you are usually the one giving me the answers first so you are a pro in my book. Even though you keep busting my bubble you are at least teaching me at the same time and I thank you for that.

I agree that @john1 is a pro.
For your coin, it looks to me like a gouge in the surface of the coin that happens to start at the tip of Abe's nose. As it gets over to the rim, you can see where the metal has been scraped away a little bit. For me, this coin is a spender.

Not a die gouge. It might be an impression from another coin along with a scratch on the coin? The arc looks wrong in shape for another coin though. John1

Thanks fellas I appreciate all the comments. It is depressed coin frog even though it plays tricks on your eyes when under the microscope since my dang camera has a hard time with really shiny pennies and turns it to a darker grey color so I have to really twist and turn to get it right. I think after a week or so straight of looking through change my eyes are really making me see things that are not there. Of course I don't know what I am looking for in the first place so that don't help neither. LOL!

Not a gouge, as the affected area is incuse. Without a full show of the obverse, I'm leaning more toward the coin was squeezed with another coin, with the rim from the other coin leaving the incuse line into the coin. (looks like part of a semi circle?)

Quote: Not a die gouge. Sorry just to be clear, I meant a gouge on the surface of the coin rather than a die event. I agree that it is damage.

99% of the damaged coins with incuse marks are post mint damage. Only 1% of incuse marks on a coin is are mint errors. This is in the majority category. PSD
