I've noticed that a lot of 1940s pennies have this striped effect almost like the alloy wasn't mixed properly and oxidized differently in different places. Does anyone know what causes it and why it happened so much on these dates?

Improperly mixed planchet more commonly known as a "woodie" or woodgrain cent.

@sc, here is an old CCF thread with 24 pages worth of so-called woodie coins. Yours is in good company!

That area on the stock material was not mixed completely.
