I'm gonna guess someone put some salt on it and poured some vinegar on it. The salt grains could justify
the perfect little squares. What do you think?

I'll guess the pitting is from exposure to an acid. Compare it to this coin:

I see where you're going Kurt, but I've had several of those acid-dipped ones before. Mine still feels smooth as a cent should compared to the gritty feel of the acid-dipped one. Maybe it's just one of those deals where someone was bored or something. Who knows?

Hmmm...ok, I think I jumped to conclusions here!
Now looking closer at your coin, do you notice how the spots have a consistently cubic shape, while varying in size?
You got my curiosity now...have you put this under a scope; does the discoloration appear to be differing color in the metal?
Seeing those cubic spots makes me almost think of some kind of crystalization at work. I see the same process on the coin's rim.
I'm not a metallurgist--is it possible for different alloys to crystalize out of a cooling ingot in such patterns?

Wow...the regularity there is intriguing, as well as those faint connectors between each cubic area.
Aha--salt/vinegar? Yeah, those shapes sure remind me of salt, lol...most plausible.

We could ask everybody if they were the culprit, but I think I'll just throw it
back in the recycle bin and just call it a strange anomaly. Thanks for your help, guys!
