I have a roll of 2008 Silver Eagles that don't have the "W" mint mark, however they look burnished. Does anyone know if this is possible? I thought only the "W" mint mark was burnished. Any Silver Eagle experts out there who can clarify for me? Maybe these are error coins?

I just added photos if that helps

Thanks

2008 ASEs without a mint mark will be the bullion variety and yes, minted at West Point. They were sold directly to 3rd party Precious Metals dealers, and then resold to investors. This is very likely what you have.

Burnished 2008 ASEs have the "W" mint mark, were packaged in mint packaging and sold retail by the U.S. Mint to whomever wanted to buy, similar to the Proof ASE offering.

There are 4 varieties of ASE available for 2008:
1. Bullion ( no mint mark)
2. Proof (W)
3. Burnished (W)
4. Burnished w/ Reverse of 2007 (W)

I think it's often very difficult to tell the difference between a nice looking bullion and a burnished W.

The pictures look like regular bullion to me.

I personally don't see the difference between a burnished and a nice conditioned uncirculated. it's literally a buffed die that imparts a bit more luster to the strike, and kind of hard to tell the difference between the two visually if the bullion uncirculated is just a really good strike,.

I dunno, I think it was just a way for them to add another mint product for collectors to buy, I mean it's the difference between a satin finish, and a slightly more satiny finish in my opinion, but the burnished carry the W mintmark and that is the major difference.

maybe a burnished collector will disagree with me, and can point out the differences but Personally I don't see it from a well struck bullion that's in really nice uncirculated condition.

it's like the satin finish mint set coins and the circulation strikes, I don't see a real difference there when you compare a nice business strike to the one in the mint set.

My burnished 2011 ASE has a really cool rainbow sheen compared to the "regular" uncirculated ASE from the same set (both slabbed 70s). On the other hand I cannot tell a single difference between burnished and bullion version for my slabbed 2019 set (which I'm almost done assembling, stay tuned!).
