Found this going through my father's collection. It's in a commercial looking cardboard holder marked "John F. Kennedy" "1917-1963" and "35th President" and was inside of a plastic hinged type holder. Hard to explain. Does anyone know what the lines in front of and behind/below the ear? Or what caused them? Thanks

to the CCF! It's part of the design. The lines show better on early die state and uncirculated coins. They are often mistaken for fingerprints.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

I don't buy that explanation. If it is part of the design then they should show clearly on the proofs and I'm not aware of them being there.

It sure looks like fingerprints to me. None of my unc. Kennedy's have these marks.

I am with conder101 on this. But rest assured, they are not finger prints. I have a large collection of 64 Kennedy halves, mostly DDO / DDR & RPMs and ALL of the DDO's without exception have these markers on the Kennedys' Neck,Ear and the lower right corner OF the Jaw.And it has gotten to the point that when I am looking thru the roll and I notice these lines on the Neck I get excited that most likely it is a DDO. It is a good question and I'd like to know the correct answer as well.

I am not 100%, but I don't think this was ever a proof. It's mounted in card board inside a snap case. I will post a pic if that gives anyone an idea about origin. I've only seen one other.

I went through my collection of Kennedy half dollars (several hundred) and I found those lines on the neck on almost all of the ODV-001 and ODV-002. 1964 - 1970, proofs and business strikes, not on a few LDS. Did not see any lines on the neck of any ODV-003's. So, it looks like as coop said, those marks are part of the design on the ODV-001 and ODV-002.and the design was change for ODV-003 and beyond. Attached are photos showing the change from 1970 to 1971.

They slowly wear off the dies. But many show these. (First time I saw it I thought it was a finger print. Started look and found out that a lot have that and figured out it is part of the design.
