Not sure if this is the right forum, but I'm curious how many different dies are used in the production of the w mint quarters, and would I be able to distinguish a difference? Thanks.

I've read somewhere that the average production die life for clad quarters is around 250,000 strikes. So, if that number is still valid the they would have needed at least 8 pair of dies to strike 2 million coins.

As far as identifying coins from specific dies, you should be able to do that on some coins as wear, die clashes and polishing begins to take its toll.

Maybe somebody else here will have more recent info.

Forum was okay, but your reply was split into its own topic for the proper attention.

I think die life may be a little longer than that, but a safe bet would be somewhere between 4 and 8 die pairs. And if they have two presses running them they can crank out the entire mintage of each one in less than 2 days. If they use 4 die pair and 4 presses they can do the whole run for each in 11 hours.

Thank you Westernsky and Conder101. I know these wouldn't actually be considered varieties, but what differences would I look for on new quarters to distinguish the different die sets? With the relatively low mintages I would like to find as many different examples as I can.

About the only differences you might find would be die cracks, die scratches, chips, or polishing lines. Since ALL the features of the design are in the hub, the only differences between the dies has to come from differences in handling, polishing or Die Deterioration.
