So I know that for ww2 they had to switch nickels to silver but I believe I have a copper one, any way to test it?

@mooni, first welcome to CCF. Second, it seems more likely to me that this coin is just stained to a copper color, but if you will post the weight then we should know for sure.

no, you have a 35% silver War Nickel. Not an error, but a good find! Nickels were minted with 35% silver from 1942-1946 to save copper/nickel for the war effort. As a result, these coins patinate differently than most nickels. Barring an unthinkable drop in silver prices, this coin will always be worth above face for the precious metal content, so worth saving.

Right, these war-time nickels are basically a copper/silver alloy, so they tone much differently than "nickel" nickels.

Colour of a coin is not a reliable means to determine composition.

If you can find somebody with an XRF you could determine the surface composition with certainty.

Silver tones. That is what you are seeing, the tarnish.
