Hello everybody ^^ I am french and I would like to buy a Morgan dollar belt, I have found one that I like but I am not sure wether the coins are genuine or not. Looking at these pictures, could you tell if it seems legit or not ? The seller says it is a very old belt. Many thanks ! Edited by Anika 04/25/2020 12:37 pm

They look weird to me, but that might be to do with years of polishing.
Three different, common years is a good sign.

Bienvenue Anika! I can see nothing immediately wrong with these dollars. If they were bright and shiny I would be suspect. But they are worn and were taken out of circulation when a Morgan dollar was worth only a dollar. Once at an antique show I saw belts and all sorts of clothing decorated with coins. People liked to show off back then! Would you wear the belt?

I think they're okay. No doubt their centers have been repeatedly polished over the years. How about a pic of the whole belt? to the CCF!

I am going to stop short of calling the coins counterfeit as I would like to see the reverse before making a judgement. The toning on the coins reminds me of the toned Chinese Counterfeits. The toning on the coins is made up and not natural. The details on the coins do not look sharp. On the 81, there are some possible raised cast bumps, but better photos are needed to tell. I would pass just based on the toning.

Look genuine to me. For the record I own a brown leather motorcycle vest with Buffalo nickel snaps. Threw that out there since there's nothing wrong with coin themed apparel and accessories.

The toning is just fine considering IT IS A BELT. It has been worn and had material rubbing it that has been washed in detergents etc. Plus whatever tanning chemicals in the leather have effected them as well. And sweat. And God knows what else. I see nothing here that screams counterfeit.

They look weird to me as well, but it could just be the wear pattern.

They look genuine to me, and if the belt was made pre-1970's, it's likely they are real since Morgans were pretty inexpensive then. You might just check if they are magnetic as a quick check for fakes.

Hello everybody, thank you for all your replies ! I am afraid I don't have better quality pictures of these coins :( @Slider23, yes I have heard that Morgan dollars should not tarnish brown at all but rather black/dark grey, but I thought since this is a belt that was heavily worn outside in a ranch for years maybe the brown was to be expected ? And @Matthewvincent, merci :D ! yeaaaah I'm nuts about coin adornment :D I will wear the belt as part as my belly dance costume as I collect antiques to use on stage ^^

Anika, Perhaps a discreet photo of you wearing the belt as part of your costume could be posted. Ça va? D'accord?

Below is a photo of a toned Chinese counterfeit, and when China produced these coins all the toning looked similar. The coins on the belt have the same toning look. I could not find any raised areas or marks on the known counterfeit to match with the belt coins. Anyway I just wanted you to have the information. The consensus on the thread is that the coins are genuine, and the members are petty good with their observations.

@Matthewvincent : Oui bien sûr ^^ but of course I didn't buy the belt yet, the seller is holding it for me right now and then there will be the shipping which will probably take a long time, so we're not quite there yet.
@Slider23 : yes thank you for the information I appreciate it, and the toning on your picture does look quite similar, except maybe for the tinges of blue and purple. Do you know when these Chinese counterfeits were made ? The seller said he bought this belt in the early 80s.

Believe the toning is "too good". Start with a magnet and a google search for "counterfeit Morgan dollar".
