@mrEd, we sometimes see similar damage to the letter L in LIBERTY. As I recall, it might be from the mechanical action of old-fashioned gumball machines.

Just look at a genuine 1954 cent, and you can easily tell it is a 1951.

Looks like Mint Mark Style MMS-003 so it is a 1951 D... the 1954 D is MMS-006
