Today's pick up is FR 1381 or the 50 cent from the 5th issue. The 5th issue were released from 2/26/1874 to 2/15/1876. The back of this note was printed by Joseph Carpenter of Philadelphia, while the front are printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Willam Harris Crawford was born on 2/24/1772 and died on 9/15/1834. Mr. Crawford served as Georgia State House Representative, a united states senator and as secretary of war. Crawford suffered a severe stroke in 1823, but nonetheless sought to succeed James Monroe in the 1824 election. The Democratic-Republican Party splintered into factions as several others also sought the presidency. No candidate won a majority of the electoral vote, so the United States House of Representatives chose the president in a contingent election. Under the terms of the Constitution, the House selected from the three candidates who received the most electoral votes, leaving Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, and Crawford in the running. The House selected Adams, who asked Crawford to remain at Treasury. Refusing Adams's offer, Crawford accepted appointment to the Georgia state superior court. He considered running in the 1832 presidential election, either for the presidency or the vice presidency, but ultimately chose not to run. Crawford, GA is named in his honor. I picked this note as its in beautiful condition.

Today's pickup is an 10 cent Obsolete Note from Cuyahoga Falls. This is a common note. The note is issued by Summit County Bank. The condition is CU with 3 light pencil marks (h) on the reverse. Cuyahoga Falls is a city in Summit County, Ohio, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 49,652. It is the second-largest city in Summit County and part of the Akron, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1812 by William Wetmore and was originally named Manchester, but renamed for the Cuyahoga River and the series of waterfalls that run along the southern boundary of the city. Cuyahoga Falls is bordered by Akron to the south and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park to the northwest.

This is what the set of fractional Summit Co. notes looks like. They look nice as a group.

Today's note is a series of 1928 $1 United States Notes were issued as a response to the Great Depression. Most of these remained in storage before being released in Puerto Rico during 1948-9. The story of the 1928 is a strange one, in that it doesn't make any chronological sense. All 1928 red seal dollar bills say series of 1928 on them. However, they were actually not printed until 1933. To make things even odder, 1928 one dollar red seals didn't get released for circulation until late 1948. When they were finally released into circulation, Puerto Rico was chosen as the location of distribution. Despite that less than direct path, many low serial number, choice uncirculated, red seal one dollar bills exist today. The collectability of the 1928 one dollar red seal does relate to the fact that it is a one year design and the note is very distinctive. Thanks to research, we know that 1,872,012 notes were printed. All of these notes were printed in Washington DC and they are all signed by WO Woods as the treasurer of the united states and WH Woodin as secretary of the treasury. The back of all 1928 one dollar red seals feature the funnyback design.

Nice selection. According to what I've read, Puerto Rico was chosen as the distribution point for the 1928 red seal LT's to avoid creating "sorting problems" for this one-time issue at banks on the mainland.
