I'm new around here, so apologies in advance if I stumble, commit etiquette faux pas or otherwise embarrass myself. I wanted to post an introduce myself. It seemed only polite before posting to ask questions and avail myself of the collective and individual wisdom of members of this site.
When I was younger I collected coins. It started when my father gave me a proof set for my birth year, a roll of quarters and a Whitman folder. Over the years he would bring me rolls of coins and I would give him back the discards. I went to the local coin shop and spent hard earned money from chores around the neighborhood on fascinating trinkets. I finally acquired my fist error coin - a buffalo head nickel - but never could afford the 1909-S VDB penny I stared longingly at.
And then I discovered cars and girls and went to college. And gradually I stopped doing much more than buying an annual proof set. And then I got married and had kids and sometimes even forgot to buy the annual proof set.
But here's the funny thing - my kids grew and are now 8 and 10. And the world - my world - got turned upside down by a virus that no one seems to really understand. And my wife needed a break from home schooling the kids and so I dusted off my old Whitman folders and showed them to my boys.
And they were fascinated. And so I went to the bank and bought rolls of pennies and quarters. And we've been at it through this pandemic. My younger son searches pennies with me and my older son searches quarters. We're making our way through boxes of coins and watch youtube videos of coin roll searching.
It's been pure joy. My younger son found a 1901
Indian Head penny and literally ran around the house jumping up and down and yelling. He's showed it to everyone from his school teacher (via Zoom) to his grandparents. My older son found a 1964 silver quarter and will tell anyone who asks that it is the most valuable thing in the world. There are a lot more reverses to quarters than there used to be. I don't love the shield reverse on Lincoln cents.
It's been amazing. And fun. And a distraction during these terrible times. And so I'm getting back into the hobby myself. And I've got questions. A lot of them. I hope I can ask them here. It seems like a wonderful place and great group of people to share this joyful distraction from tough times with.
